Most utilities have a center from which all transmission and distribution (T&D) operations are controlled by the electric utility’s "system operator." Many utilities have developed detailed switching procedures for specific de-energization and power rerouting tasks. These procedures are typically very comprehensive, including the confirmation and verification of commands received between the system operator and field personnel at remote locations. Before beginning work, and as part of the job briefing, the person in charge at the work site must review the isolation steps with all workers that will be doing the work. When field personnel need to reroute power or de-energize T&D lines and equipment for the work in which a system operator is in charge, various regulatory entities require specific sequence steps be followed to ensure system reliability and personnel safety.

Kansas Municipal Utilities is pleased to offer the T&D Switching Coordination Workshop. This workshop will provide an overview of the numerous regulatory requirements associated with T&D switching operations, as well as provide participants examples of how other electric utilities execute switching orders to ensure compliance and worker safety. Many of the sessions will be facilitated by public power and investor owned electric utility professionals in a panel format to facilitate the sharing of best practices across a spectrum of system sizes.

The workshop is provided over two days and will be held at the KMU Training Center in McPherson, Kansas. The workshop is designed for managers, safety professionals, electric utility engineers, crew leaders, as well as all electric utility field personnel with decision making responsibilities for the electric transmission and distribution switching order creation and execution of their utilities.
