A cybersecurity exercise to improve the cyber and physical security of municipal electric utilities in Kansas is planned for November 7 at the KMU Training Center in McPherson. KMU is pleased to join with KMEA and KPP to sponsor this important training event.

This tabletop exercise is offered by the American Public Power Association (APPA) as part of their cooperative agreement with the Department of Energy to improve cyber and physical security posture of the electric sector. Leading the exercise will be national experts in cyber preparedness and response. The event will provide attendees with an opportunity to discuss their organization’s security, preparedness and response efforts, as well as exploring coordination using a realistic scenario similar to the cyber-attack on the Ukrainian power grid.

Participation in the event is limited to 30 KMU member cities. However, cities and utilities are encouraged to bring along two representatives: one city or utility manager and one technical/IT representative. Provided sufficient interest and participation, we will split the exercise into one aimed for utility and city managers and one for technical IT staff. More than two city representatives may attend, but additional individuals will only be able to observe.
