Because surface water supplies are so susceptible to pollution and pathogenic contamination, a multiple barrier approach to water treatment is necessary. The focus of this workshop is to take a deeper dive into surface water treatment , including: understanding how the biology and chemistry impact all aspects of surface water treatment; the critical elements of treatment, disinfection, filtration and breaking out specialized treatment processes. A breakout session for understanding CT calculations will also be offered if desired by attendees. There is no cost to attend this class and lunch will be provided.

Agenda Topics:
Microbiology and chemistry
Pretreatment
Coagulation, flocculation
Sedimentation, clarifiers
Filtration, disinfection
Specialized treatment processes

Therefore, cross connection control remains a critical link in protecting public health by maintaining the quality of drinking water from the source, through the distribution system, and to the customers. Drinking water quality will be jeopardized without a persistent effort in cross connection control, regardless of efforts to protect the source of supply and improved treatment techniques. Kansas Regulations state that all public water systems should have regular programs for the detection and elimination of cross connections. The water system is responsible for developing and implementing a cross-connection control program for their community. This 1-hour training is intended to introduce the basics of a cross-connection control program to public water supply personnel, health officials, and others involved in the administration of cross connection control programs for their water distribution systems.

Funding for this training is provided through a contractual agreement between the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Wichita State University Environmental Finance Center and Kansas Municipal Utilities.
