The training covers the essential mechanics and regulations that keep potable water systems clean.

• Understanding Backflow Hazards: Students learn how backflow can introduce dangerous substances—such as chemicals, medical waste, or debris—into the local water supply, exposing downstream consumers to serious health risks.

• The Science of Flow: Instruction focuses on how pressure differences cause water to reverse direction. This includes identifying risks at "cross-connections," which are points where a consumer's system (like irrigation or fire sprinklers) meets the public supply.

• Prevention Strategies: The class details methods to mitigate risks, including:
  Limiting the number of physical cross-connections.
  Tracking hazardous connections based on building and plumbing codes.
  Installing and maintaining specialized valve assemblies designed to relieve pressure and block reverse flow.

• Annual & Event-Based Testing: Testers are taught that valves require annual inspections to monitor for wear and tear, as well as mandatory testing after any new installation, repair, or relocation.

• Interpreting Results: Participants learn to verify that seals and valve seats are perfectly aligned and free of debris.

To become certified, the participant must pass both a written test and complete testing on atmospheric/pressure vacuum breaker assemblies, double check valve assemblies, and reduced pressure principle assemblies, and identify any that does not pass testing. After passing both exams, the participant will be certified as a backflow prevention tester with Kansas Municipal Utilities.

**If you are a recertification, you will need to attend days 2 and 3 (July 9 and 10, from 9-4), and take a written test as well as successfully test the backflow devices. To be eligible for recertification, a copy of your CURRENT CCC/BF prevention Certificate (can be from another provider) must be emailed to smiller@kmunet.org or kmu@kmunet.org prior to the class.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their own calibrated testing gauges for the hands-on sessions.

As of February 7, 2022, entry-level drivers subject to the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations must complete the required training from a registered training provider before obtaining a CDL or specified endorsement for the first time. State Driver Licensing Agencies will now use the information in the Training Provider Registry to verify that a CDL applicant has completed the required training before administering the applicable skills or knowledge test. Individuals subject to the ELDT regulations include those applying to obtain a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL, or obtain a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time.

KMU is registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as a Training Provider to provide the ELDT training.

HOW IT WORKS
The ELDT training program requirement consists of 3 distinct phases of instruction (Theory, Behind the Wheel Range, and Behind the Wheel Public Road). KMU provides the written portion of the training, whereas the candidate receives hands-on training at their facility from a KMU certified BTW Instructor.

KMU staff will teach the theory curriculum in a 1-day workshop format at the KMU Training Center. During this workshop, participants will receive the required theory curriculum and take the KMU theory written test.

KMU will provide a CDL BTW Instructor Credential course to KMU Members. The employees that complete this course will receive KMU BTW instructor credentials that will authorize them to train and qualify their employees in the 2 hands-on Behind the Wheel training phases. Kansas Municipal Utilities will be holding mobile crane certification and examination classes for digger derrick, service truck, and mobile crane operators. OSHA’s updated crane standard requires that operators of lifting equipment be trained, evaluated and tested in order to obtain certification.

What Do These Classes and Certification Consist of:
Kansas Municipal Utilities (KMU) is providing mobile crane certification and examination classes for digger derrick, service truck, and mobile crane operators. The certification course will be four (4) days which will consist of three (3) days of classroom instruction and one (1) day for certification exam with an 80% pass requirement, and a practical exam for certification of mobile crane. Please plan to be in attendance all 5 days, as Friday is the test retake day and for the remaining individuals needing to take the practical exam.  

Who Should Attend?
Digger derrick and service truck crane operators who do not currently hold a mobile crane operator’s certification or those who need to recertify.

2026 Kansas Locate Rodeo Presented by Kansas Municipal Utilities and Kansas 811.

Competitors will have the opportunity to showcase their locating skills and have the chance to earn a sponsorship to the International Locate Rodeo held in Springfield, MO. The Kansas Locate Rodeo, held in McPherson, Kansas, will follow the same rules as the IRL. Participants may only compete in ONE division.

Kansas Municipal Utilities and Subsurface Solutions are pleased to be in partnership for this workshop. The workshop will address both the art and science behind underground utility line locating. It will provide a balance of classroom training and hands-on field instruction performed outdoors.

Participants will gain the ABC & XYZ of locating buried pipes and cables. Special emphasis is placed on mastery of the electronic detection equipment and troubleshooting techniques to solve utility locating problems. Participants will also gain an overall understanding of utility and pipeline construction and design. Upon successful completion of both a written exam and field certification evaluation, participants will be provided a Certificate of Completion.
